Site Information:
Below are a list of steps to assist you in using the Citation Generator for the first time. Please note that no two types of citations are done precisely the same way, but these are some guidelines to follow:
- Select "Citation Tool"
- Choose the appropriate style. (i.e. MLA, APA, etc.)
- In most cases you will want to choose the newest version of this style, in this case it is 6 MLA/Turabian and 5 APA (as of Aug. 3rd, 2006).
- Select the type of work being cited. (i.e. book, pamphlet, Web Pages, etc.)
- Now select a more specific type of what work you will be citing. (i.e. an article from an encyclopedia, an article from a magazine, etc.)
- (Optional) At this point if your works being cited are from an online source, such as an online book or website of some sort check the "online source" box in corner.
NOTE: This feature is locked on some documents where appropriate (the Web Page citation for example)
- Now you need to enter the information you have gathered from the work being cited
- The yellow boxes are required information; this is the information you will need to enter in order for the citation to be absolutely correct according to the format you selected.
- The white boxes are not required, but if you already know the information, we strongly suggest using it.
- Upon completing the need information click the "Generate Citation" button to proceed.
- Look over the citation for any grammatical errors or mistyped information, and if all is correct choose "Add to Citation Page". If you notice any errors select "Return to Data Entry" to make any needed corrections.
- Once you have completed a citation entry for your work cited, if you have more works to cite at this point you may select the "Start Over" button to begin adding another work to your list. Just follow the same procedure as listed above.
As you add more citations, you will notice the blue box in the lower left hand corner of the page begins to fill up with them. At this point you have the option of viewing your citation page, or downloading it.
- After completing all your works that need to be cited, select the style you wish to export it as in the blue window in the lower left corner
- Now you can click one of the two buttons in the blue box.
- To download a formatted citation page to your computer, click the
button. This will send a .rtf file (Rich Text Format) to whatever word processing program you use. (i.e. Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, OpenOffice, etc.)
- To view a formatted preview of your page, click the
button. This will display a formatted example of what will be created when you download a page.
- If you want to remove a citation from a page, just hit the
button next to the citation you wish to remove.
- Congratulations! You now have a completed works cited page, now if only we could write your paper for you!
