Site Information:

Although the Citation tool is a great resource to use, there may be instances where our software will be unable to pick up certain errors that could compromise the citation’s proper format. Some of these may be:

  • Incorrect capitalization - This may happen sometimes. MLA style requires capitalization of every important word in a title, APA style only requires capitalization of the first word. Our software may not pick this up. Make sure all your capitalization is correct.
  • Name Order - Some names may be cited in a different order due to nationality. In the case, our software does not ensure correct citation. For example, if the name Vincent De Gaul is a Spanish name it would be cited MLA style as:

De Gaul, Vincent. "Better Days" Illinois: Book Publishing, 2004.

Where if it were a French name it would be cited MLA style as:

Gaul, Vincent De. "Better Days" Illinois: Book Publishing, 2004.

  • Incorrect abbreviations or spelling - Our software does not spell check. Double check on the correct abbreviations and spelling.
  • Required information - While using our software, you may notice when entering in a date, the year is the only required line. When citing things such as a monthly publication, you will need to enter in more information than just the year. Make sure to include the month and day in your citation.
  • Differences in parenthetical citations - There are some instances where the use of parenthetical citations may be different. Such as if the source has a corporate author or if there are two or three different authors. In this case, the Citation tool may not be able to differentiate these circumstances.

If you do not enter a date, the date will automatically default to January 1970.

Because of some these inaccuracies, we can not fully guarantee the accuracy of the citations that the Citation tool creates.

If you have any questions about citation and how it should be used, please refer to your library for a copy of:
