
Will your paper be an in depth analysis or an overview? If you have a general topic, try to narrow it down to something more specific.
If you are writing an overview, a general topic such as "Real Estate" may be fitting for your paper, but if you are writing an in depth analysis, you may want to narrow it down to "Buying a Home" or "Selling Your Home".
This will help you organize your ideas. Start by stating your main idea and then bulleting each point that you would like to make. For example if your topic was buying a home:
Buying a Home
If it was a persuasive paper you would list your best arguments, if it is informative, make your best points. If you are trying to describe a process, start from the beginning and explain it through until the end.
You could also draw out your ideas. Start with your main idea in the middle of the page. Either circle or underline it, and "web" the rest of your ideas from this main point. Starting from your main idea, draw lines out to the points you like to make, then from those points, draw a line to supporting facts or information that back up your points. This way, you will have a visual "web" of your ideas to organize your thoughts.
This statement will let the reader know what the paper is about and the point you are trying to make. For example:
Before you purchase a home, there are many steps you must take.
You now must describe, argue, or persuade your topic to the reader. Each of your main points should have a few paragraphs that support it.
Write your ideas out in a sentence. For example one of your main points is:
When you apply for a mortgage loan, the lender must assess you financial status.
Then you must give several supporting points to back up the main point. Under each of these supporting points, add more detail. For example:
The lender will take a look at your credit report, check if you have any outstanding debts, and if you have any assets.
The introduction paragraph will be written to catch the reader’s attention. These will be several sentences written to pull the reader in. Start with some surprising information, a short story, or a few informative sentences that will lead up to your theses statement. Your thesis statement should be the last sentence in this paragraph. All the information in this paragraph should be true.
The conclusion paragraph should be a summary of all the points you have made. Re-word your points, do not repeat them exactly. You can also add in some of your thoughts in this paragraph.
Read through your paper to catch any spelling or grammatical errors. Also, look through your assignment and make sure you didn’t miss anything. Double check your supporting information to make sure its correct. If possible, try to get someone else to read your paper to see if they can find any errors.
